Common inlet types include turf grass (sod) strips and rock riprap.

Turf grass (sod) inlet to residential rain garden     Rock riprap inlet to bioretention area

Common problems associated with these inlet types include:

Build up of the sod at the curb-cut inlet can restrict runoff from entering the bioretention area, particularly for low flows, thereby eliminating any water quality benefit.

Built up sod at inlet causing low flow to bypass residential rain garden inlet

Improperly sized or installed riprap can lead to erosion and undermining of the adjacent curb and gutter.

Severely eroded rain garden inlet

Removal of accumulated sediment requires hours of maintenance or replacement of the inlet.

Significant sediment accumulation within rock riprap inlet     Significant sediment accumulation at rain garden inlet

Sediment not captured by effective pretreatment enters the basin, stresses the plant community, and reduces infiltration capacity.

Excessive sediment accumulation in a rain garden basin largely devoid of plants
